Miguel Ángel Lobaino Borges (Lobaino)
Miguel Ángel Lobaina Borges, born in 1953 in Guantánamo, studied at the Art Academy in Santiago de Cuba with a specialization in sculpture, ceramics, and drawing, and went on to study art history at the Universidad de Oriente. He now teaches at the Academia de Artes Plásticas “José Joaquín Tejada” in Santiago de Cuba.
His focus on graphic art brought him 16 individual shows in Cuba and abroad as well as numerous collective exhibits. He has won over 50 awards and mentions for his work at national salons in Cuba.
His engravings have appeared in many international exhibits. His work has received national and international awards. He is a founder of the Brigade Hermanos Saiz, made up of artists and writers.

Among those pieces brought to Sarasota, El Bojeo has a special personal representation for Lobaino. It depicts a group of young Cuban artists, beneath a colorful umbrella, who set out to travel around the island country by boat. Lobaino could not join the troupe, “so I made the picture instead,” he said.
