Mauricio Reyes Aranda (Mauricio)
Mauricio Reyes Aranda, born in Santiago de Cuba in 1973, is a graduate of the José Joaquín Tejada Academy of Fine Art. He also has studied set design, photography and graphic arts.His paintings deal with the confluence of African and Roman Catholic religions, Cuban forms and surrealism. His imagery often includes references to Elegguá, the Yoruba or Santer’a messenger to God, often prayed to by practitioners as a clay head with cowrie shells for eyes and mouth.
His works are in collections in Japan, England, France, Spain and other countries. In 2010, Reyes spent a month as an artist-in-residence in Ontario, Canada.
