In times of difficulty, people turn to many different outlets: some drink, others go to church, some become depressed, others work harder, and on and on.
Cubans are now relegated to standing in long lines to buy a piece of bread or an egg, which often, is sold out before they reach the front of the line.
Before going to Cuba in December 2024, I had the feeling that our friends were in a collective depression. This is unusual for Cubans who are, for the most part, willing to make jokes about their misfortunes; they will sing and dance at the drop of hat. Not so now. There was a pervasive sense of hopelessness.
On our trip to Cuba over Christmas 2024, we were able to assist some of our friends with organizing a Patio Potting project: planting vegetables in the back yard. The idea merits help: immediate needs were ceramic pots, potting soil, and seeds.
- Our friends at Southern Horticulture in St. Augustine have contributed over 300 seed packets (carrots, okra, tomatoes, lettuce, and a multitude of other wonderful vegetables).
- Our friend Miguelo has made over 100 terracotta pots that are perfect for growing vegetables.
- Our friend Dr. Henry donated rich, fertile soil from his small farm.
The Pilot Project consisted of 10-20 city-dwelling families who have patios but no earth. The enthusiasm was palpable.
The collective depression has changed to a feeling of “I can do this” and “I will show you how and I will share with you.” Interest is spreading in the community.
The Patio Potting Project has grown wings:
