The Friendship Association is funding a pilot project to provide reliable solar energy to isolated communities located in the rural areas in and around Baracoa, Cuba.

OBJECTIVE:

Deliver solar-powered inverters with lithium-battery storage to underserved communities lacking stable grid access.

Project description:

Cuba has been experiencing significant electric energy shortages caused by breakdowns in oil-fired plants, challenges in securing consistent fuel supplies, and a slew of major hurricanes that have exacerbated the aging electrical grid infrastructure. The long-standing U.S. trade embargo has impeded Cuba’s ability to procure essential equipment and spare parts necessary for maintaining and upgrading its power infrastructure. Frequent and prolonged blackouts have severely impacted daily life, the economy, and essential services.

These communities have been particularly hard-hit due to their distance from the country’s main power generation facilities and the damage caused by hurricanes, which have destroyed much of the power infrastructure. Without help, they will be the last to see power stabilized.

In each of these communities, there is a central structure that serves as a vital hub for education, healthcare, and social gatherings.

The solar powered systems are designed to provide power to communities with NO or very little electricity from the national grid.  They operate using solar panels, an inverter, and lithium-battery storage.

By equipping these centers with solar power supplies, we hope to provide a sustainable, uninterrupted energy solution that powers:

  • Up to 10 light bulbs
  • A refrigerator/freezer (for food and medicine storage)
  • Communication system (for community events and emergency communications)
  • Phone charging
  • Hope!

A 2-3 kW hybrid solar power supply will support basic amenities like lighting, refrigeration, and communication systems to confront situations that have no or very little electric power.

Our request:

We have allocated $25,000 to purchasing and shipping power supplies to selected communities. We  hope to raise a further $25,000 to enable us to double our impact in other communities.

Conclusion:

Your support will provide sustainable energy, fostering resilience and self-sufficiency. Join us in powering hope for these families.Your contribution will make a tangible difference in the lives of these families in these communities. Together we can we can help communities foster self-sufficiency.
