During a recent humanitarian mission in Eastern Cuba, we encountered a group of families living in an isolated and underserved area of Humboldt National Park. Among them, we met a remarkable group of women who identified a pressing issue: the annual waste of locally grown fruit – im particular mangoes – due to a lack of preservation methods.
These women have developed an innovative solution—bottling the fruit using recycled beer bottles.
While they have access to the bottles, they told us that they lack the necessary crown caps to seal them effectively.
This small but impactful initiative has the potential to create significant economic opportunities for the community by reducing food waste, fostering self-sufficiency––and even generating some income.
We believe this project could serve as a pilot for similar initiatives in other communities, creating a ripple effect of positive change.
