Baracoa is considered an irreplaceable biodiversity hotspot in the Insular Caribbean because of its geographical location between mountains, rivers and coasts, together with the climatic characteristics of the territory.

It has unique ecosystems that are home to many emblematic endemic species such as the exquisite Polymita picta, a snail with brightly colored shells, and the Solenodon cubanus, considered a living fossil, both vulnerable because of habitat loss and predation.

This natural wealth faces increasing threats: deforestation, climate change, unsustainable agricultural practices and illegal hunting, among other factors, which compromise both biodiversity and resilience of the communities that depend on these resources.

The Anfiloquio Suárez Castellanos Zoo, located in Baracoa, Cuba, faces critical conditions due to its obsolete and poor infrastructure: inappropriate habitats not aligned with modern standards for animal welfare, the presence of exotic animals without local ecological relevance and the lack of appropriate educational programs.

In this context, the rescue centers of wildlife are pillars in the protection of biodiversity, combining direct action, education and science to mitigate the human impact on ecosystems.

This project proposes the transformation of the Baracoa zoo into a sanctuary for the rescue of local fauna (especially threatened species), the redesign of environmental enrichment programs and the strengthening of community participation through workshops and volunteers, especially with children and young people.

The intervention integrates rescue, conservation, scientific research, education, sustainability and technology, while recovering the historical value of the zoo and positioning it as an ethical conservation model for Cuba and the Caribbean.

The success of the project will depend on multi-sectoral collaboration and continuous commitment to international standards, ensuring a lasting legacy for future generations.
